Tools for the forest campaign!

Over the month of June we are running a “Tools for the Forest” campaign.  With our new forest enclosure full of chimpanzees the keepers will need some tools to take care of the enclosure and dormitory.  Money donated this month towards running costs will be used to purchase shovels, rakes, machetes, scrubbing brushes, a wheelbarrow and materials to build a tool rack. Donate in June to help us with this and you will receive a nice photo of Shege, one of the chimps that just moved into the new enclosure! Shege is a gentel and funny adult female, everyone that meets her fall in love! She is absolutely loving the forest :) Thank you for your support :)

Construction begins on the new baboon facility!

Saturday we started to measure out the perimeters for the new baboon facility which has been financed by the Fondation Brigitte Bardot!

This facility will improve the life of our baboon residents no end! We will keep you updated on the progress.

The overhang for the forest fence is going up fast now! The fence is looking more complete every day!

The fence construction is continuing, with the mesh up on over half the fence today! We are moving forward, which is a relief, but still have some way to go. If you would like to contribute to the fence appeal, 100% of the funds donated through the blog go directly to the fence construction! Watch this space for more updates!

IPS Grant for CRPL!

Fantastic News! The International Primatological Society has awarded the CRPL a Captive Care Grant of $1500 to go toward the building of the forest enclosure! They also awarded the CRPL the Conservation through Community Involvement part of the grant which we applied for. This $500 will pay for bamboo and the planting of this bamboo in the savannah area of the enclosure. The hope is that this will give the chimpanzees another area with activity within the enclosure! However, the real aim is to have the community involved and benefiting as much as possible from the building of this enclosure. Therefore, we have offered to the MALWIUMA that they plant the bamboo and be paid for their services. The MALWIUMA is made up of women from the local community (many of them are wives of our workers). They conceived the idea of the group themselves and have offered the CRPL much support over the past 2 years. This includes planting crops on our land for free and giving us things from their crops to feed the animals. Their help means a lot to us and it is wonderful to have the ability to pay them for their hard work!

New baboon enclosure

A new baboon enclosure is almost finished at Lwiro. It is sponsored by POPOF through MONUCs quick inpact projects. It's much needed as there now is 8 baboons at CRPL.
